A new partnership opens the door to new opportunities to integrate easy-to-use SEL assessment tools with comprehensive K-12 learning programs
I love this time of year. As a former teacher – and student – I enjoyed the freedom and lazier pace of summer, and was sad to see it end. But at the same time, going back to school always carried the excitement of new beginnings and fresh opportunities. I looked forward to reconnecting with friends and colleagues, discussing what we did on our summer vacations and delving into new lessons with new classes of students.
New partnership, new possibilities
I’m brimming with that same sense of enthusiasm this September. Plenty has been happening at Mawi Learning over the past couple of months, and I’m eager to share our news – and how it can help you meet your goals. As you may have heard, at the end of June Mawi Learning was acquired by ACT, the nonprofit learning, measurement and navigation organization behind the ACT® test.
We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far – and looking forward to continuing to develop and refine robust SEL content for students and educators in partnership with ACT. Since 2003, Mawi Learning’s evidence-based social and emotional learning curricula and tools have been used by more than 1 million K-12 students worldwide to build growth mindset, resilience, goal-setting and other critical SEL skills. Through our professional development courses, we also equip educators with the framework and competencies they need to cultivate SEL skills in their students.
A true total SEL solution
One of the biggest benefits of partnering with ACT is that we can capitalize on their deep resources to strengthen ours. Our first enhancement is to offer ACT Tessera®, a research-driven state-of-the-art SEL assessment system, which can be used in conjunction with our programs. The result is a total SEL solution that allows administrators and teachers to:
- Identify student SEL strengths and areas for improvement
- Implement a comprehensive, grade-appropriate program focused on building essential SEL skills
- Evaluate, track and report on student progress and growth in SEL
Our total solution offers numerous advantages for school communities of all sizes. These include:
CASEL-aligned SEL curricula. All Mawi Learning content at every grade level is rooted in research and aligned with CASEL’s integrated SEL model which promotes intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive competence. Turbo Leader, Mawi Learning’s middle school curriculum, was recently selected for CASEL’s 2019 Effective Social and Emotional Learning Programs Guide, which includes only evidence-based programs that demonstrate impact.
Proven results. Committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for every student who takes our SEL courses, Mawi Learning partners with school districts and external experts to study the effectiveness of our programs on an ongoing basis. Recent findings show that:
- 96% of high school students say Mawi Learning’s Leadership Skills course helped them increase their confidence, 96% say it helped them develop their confidence, and 93% said it helped them prepare for their career
- 93% of educators say Mawi Learning courses reduced students’ text anxiety
- 92% of students say Mawi Learning’s ELL course increased their pride in their family and culture
A holistic approach. We refer to our SEL framework as a “Turbo Toolkit” because it is designed to teach students to turbo-charge their inner sense of agency, which empowers them to make positive progress in academic achievement and personal well-being. Based on research that building skills in one SEL domain increases opportunities for growth in others, each of the five competencies in our Turbo Toolkit complement and reinforce each other.
So welcome back to the classroom – we hope your summer was also productive and reinvigorating!
