Super ELL Recognized as Best ELL/World Language Acquisition Instructional Solution
Chicago, ILApril 1, 2015
Super ELL is a finalist in the prestigious Software & Industry Association (SIIA) annual CODiE Awards. The CODiE Awards are the premier award for the software and information industries, and have been recognizing product excellence since 1986.
Mawi Learning’s Super ELL course is honored in the Best ELL/World Language Acquisition Instructional Solution category.
There is a massive and persistent English Language Learner (ELL) achievement gap in the United States. Traditional approaches to ELL education focus on language acquisition and content knowledge. Yet, ELL students have unique social and emotional needs. Mawi Learning’s course, Super ELL, develops confidence, builds pride in students’ culture and provides core academic skills for success.
Mawi Asgedom, founder of Mawi Learning, knows the challenges that face ELL students. As a refugee turned Harvard graduate, Asgedom has trained over 1,000,000 students through a powerful suite of courses including Super ELL, Leadership Development, College and Career Readiness, and Critical Thinking and Study Skills. These courses have been widely adopted, including at Florida Virtual School, the largest virtual school in the United States.
“We are excited to help educators meet the unique social and emotional needs of ELL students,” Asgedom said. “These skills - learning to take action, set goals, manage time - are going to help students succeed in all areas of their lives.”
98 percent of ELL students recommend Super ELL to other students, while 94 percent say the course helped them with their other classes. The lessons, which are accessible on computers and tablets, cover topics such as time management, goal-setting, community impact, social networking, college readiness and pride in one’s heritage. Students learn through interactive tools, videos and engaging examples.
